Origins of the Alpaca

Alpacas originated in the Andes Mountains of South AmericaThe world's indigenous alpaca population originated in the Andes Mountains of South America. Along the Altiplano, or "High Plains", of Bolivia, Peru and Chile, alpacas existed and thrived in their natural state for many centuries. The U.S. alpaca industry began in earnest in 1984 with the importation of native species, the founding of the national registry (A.R.I.), and the initiation of a variety of U.S. breeding strategies and techniques.
